Khalil’s Story

KHALIL'S STORY

Khalil is a 24-year-old man who was born with quadriplegic cerebral palsy and experiences dystonic movements. He also has a complicated airway condition that can be blocked simply by turning his head. He lives at home with his mum, brother, sister, and their pets.

HFH Healthcare were commissioned to meet Khalil’s complex health needs in 2018. Due to the complex nature of his airway and breathing condition, carers with extensive experience in managing tracheostomies and ventilation were required to ensure the success of his care package.

Khalil’s complex care needs include tracheostomy with ventilation, medication administration, administration nebulisation, oral suctioning, cough assist and PEG feed. He is totally reliant on others for assistance in his activities of daily living and basic care needs, such as showering, dressing, and eating.

Our experienced nurse case managers play a pivotal role in the success of all our care packages. They conduct Virtual Care Rounds every month, clinical health reviews every 8 weeks, full care plan reviews every 6 months, frequent medication audits and an ongoing risk assessment. All this ensured that Khalil’s care plan is current and relevant. Their continuous oversight and review gives our carers a detailed and coherent plan for Khalil, which the care team refer to on a daily basis.

Khalil loves music therapy, daytime TV, family time and visiting garden centres. Despite being non-verbal, he can indicate yes or no with arm movements and has a lovely smile, often seen when his dog’s name is mentioned!

Our care team have developed a strong connection with Khalil, learned his routine and requirements well, and have consistently shown exceptional caring ability. For example, due to the nature of his condition, in periods of anxiety or excitement, Khalil can stop breathing, and on such occasions, our carers have skilfully positioned Khalil to help him breathe again and reassured him that he’s ok.

Khalil’s goals in care are:

  • Attending music therapy sessions
  • To be able to go traveling with family
  • Spending lots of quality time with loved ones

Our carers provide Khalil’s mum with important respite. They are very attentive to Khalil’s needs, and support his goals well by coordinating his activities, planning days out with him and supporting his movement and transportation.

Khalil’s mum expressed that It means a lot to me that I can trust my son with the care team.”

“I wish there was more I could do to thank everyone at HFH for how they care for Khalil and support me”.
